TOWN WALLS
The oldest town center was probably built in the 7th century; it was divided into quarters, which were named after the city gates: Milje Gate, Stolna Gate, Osrednja Gate and Poljska Gate. As the town was developing, the walls started to move towards the south-east and immediately started to include new quarters that emerged outside of it. The part of the walls that surrounded the oldest part of the town in the area of the cape (the first wall) have not changed in its course, but it had to be thoroughly restored several times.
BENEČANKA
At the junction of the street Ulica IX. korpusa (Street of the 9th Corps) and Tartini Square stands a beautiful building, the most beautiful example of the Venetian-Gothic architecture in Piran. It was built in the middle of the 15th century and is thus the oldest preserved house on Tartini Square. Its exterior is decorated with exceedingly well-designed architectural elements and rich stone ornaments. The most distinctive is the Gothic corner balcony. Between the windows of the second floor there is an immured stone relief with a standing lion. Under the lion there is the inscription “Lassa pur dir” (Let them talk).
TARTINI’S HOUSE
Tartini’s House is one of the oldest houses encircling the square. Municipal documents from the year 1384 mention it as the Gothic building “Casa Pizagrua”; later, its exterior was renovated in neoclassical style. Giuseppe Tartini was born in this house. The last time the house was renovated was between the years 1985 and 1991, when interesting frescoes were uncovered during the renovation work.
TARTINI SQUARE
The place where Tartini Square is located today, was once a harbor for fishing boats of Piran. The harbor used to be outside the town walls, because the oldest, partly preserved walls propagated behind the present Town Hall. Since the year 1272 St. Peter Church stands all alone outside the walls. It was renovated in 1818. This work was entrusted to the architect Pietro Nobile, professor of the architecture department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and a court architecture counselor, and to one of the most important sculptors of Classicism in Trieste, Antonio Boso.
1ST OF MAY SQUARE
The 1st of May Square, or the Old Square (Piazza Vecchia) as it was first named, is the center of the old Punta. The main streets of Piran meet here. Inhabitants and visitors come here for shopping or a glass of local red wine. The square is a favorite meeting place for children. In the summer months, many musical, dance and theater performances are held in the center of the square. The Old Square used to be the administrative center of the town up until the 13th century.
