THE OLD CITY WALLS
The oldest town centre was probably built in the 7th century; it was divided into quarters, which were named after the city gates: the Muggia Gate, Stolna Gate, the Central Gate and the Field Gate. As the town was developing, the walls started to move towards the south-east and immediately started to include new quarters that emerged outside of it. The part of the walls that surrounded the oldest part of the town in the area of the cape (the first wall) have not changed in its course, but it had to be thoroughly restored several times.
